Old School Games: Nostaligic iPod Touch Board Games

By Randy Holden

Not long ago, a favorite pastime of many people was playing traditional board games, and they enjoyed that tremendously. They were sad to see Generation X get sucked up by newfangled video games and computer games, playing board games only to make their parents happy, then disappearing to play Airborne on the computer alone for hours on end. Soon after, the gaming world evolved once again. Multiplayer games became the "in" thing. "Millennials" might be best summed up by E.M. Forster's famous exhortation, "Only Connect." And now, the traditional board games have made a comeback. You can even play them on your very own iPhone! Below are four games that you will absolutely enjoy playing.

Conquest: It really is not very shocking that a strategy game like Risk is grouped with the most popular board games for iPhone. The thing that is amazing is it's not Lux. Conquest plays at a faster pace, is developed to feel exactly like classic board game, and offers you lots of charts and alternatives to pick from. When you have taken on the challenge of Conquest, you will never want to try any other games of this sort.

Monopoly: No, there isn't an incredible animated sequence of a guy sporting a top hat and cane taking down Godzilla. And, there isn't any bird's eye view of your pending developments or screens flashing "Take Them Down" whenever you foreclose on another player. You'll certainly appreciate playing it on the iPhone.

Scrabble: You might ask why Scrabble is included in this list. If you think Scrabble is boring, you must realize that it actually is better than many other board games. If you are an advanced player, you might not enjoy the Scrabble app made by Electronic Arts. You will probably not like the fact that you can finish a game by relying on word suggestions options. What's the point of playing if you do not even know the words you use. If you're not a hardcore player, it's like that you'll like the app.

The Game of Life: EA has updated LIFE for the iPhone, tweaking it to play faster and adding a lot of 3-D perspective in the movement. Props to EA for adding extra features onto this popular board game. But, just like the original, you and your friends or family will be will be amused with this classic -- at least until it kills your battery (the usual way a "Life" session ends!)

Whether you played the original board games during your "wonder years," or are just discovering the naked aggression of Risk or the cold heartless capitalism of Monopoly, these apps will give you a way to play them at a safe distance from family or friends -- a feature that may come in handy for some families.
