Four stars only for the single speaker, but it is a reliable Toshiba any way. I bought this netbook for my teen daughter after looking extensively at local stores.
If you want to change your background, there is a program called Oceanis Change Background that allows you do just that. And if you really need all of the features, you can use Windows Anytime Upgrade to move up to Home Premium, But I'll just stick with Starter since I have my Lenovo with Windows 7 Ultimate for when I need any of these features. Fires up quickly and does all the Office documents and web surfing I need it to. Based on other reviews I immediately upgraded the RAM to 2GB.
As an independent consultant/contractor, I repair computers, and do technical consulting. In general, I am just an all-around tech geek.
It's small (the keyboard takes a little practice) and light weight. It's more than fast enough. The only game I have loaded is Torchlight - it's a bit painful on the built-in display, but it works. Running Torchlight on an external display is excellent. I'm a little concerned about overheating--but laptop coolers are fairly inexpensive, and I'm sure with it on my lap, it will get some air circulation. Probably can't say the same thing about the floor. The battery life has been great with about 7.5 hours on Windows and about 5 hours on Linux - both are superior to a previous Asus PC netbook I was using. I love this laptop.
This is just what I was looking for: a compact portable netbook that performs in most respects like a larger, more expensive laptop. My only complaint thus far is the highly reflective screen which makes it difficult to use under some bright light conditions; perhaps I can find some sort of film that will alleviate this problem. I use it mainly to watch Netflix in bed. It works great for other functions too. My 17" notebook was in the shop for all sorts of malfunctions, and I happened to see and read reviews of this mini notebook on Amazon. For its size, you get a lot of bang for your buck.
I bought this thinking that it would be of minimal, targeted use - maybe travel. Netbooks have got a bad rap.
We also went ahead and upgraded the RAM to 2GB for another $25, so we have none of the lagging complaints I've seen when viewing videos. I was also impressed there was not a ton of "bloatware" considering the price. The first one I ordered would not start Windows and just gave a DOS screen saying it could not find the operating system. Credit Amazon for an almost totally painless return process and for having a replacement in my hands 24 hours after the defect was found. But after playing around on it, I determined that the stock operating system (Windows 7 Starter) and memory stick (1 GB DDR2) was sufficient for my needs. The netbook contains an SDHC card reader for downloading images.
