Love It - Online Personal Finance Software Critique

By Daniel Sanchez

Currently, it focuses on the essentials...your budget. However, the software is always being improved upon, and all updates are free.

Even the simplest things took forever, and even then were only achieved by Herculean effort. I eventually gave up and discovered YNAB Pro on this site and was instantly struck by the near unanimous ovation given by its users. Money is difficult to track and with various avenues for it to come, go, or just sit, its simply going to a complicated piece of software that will get it right. Even with a fairly good handle on budgeting and my own finances, I still spent the better part of 7-8 hours the first day I got it installed figuring it out. There was a learning curve at first, but once we got it down and had the transactions importing every week or two our financial situation went from nerve racking to comfortable fairly quickly. It gave us the discipline and accountability we needed to get our finances where we want them.

Other than that, nice product (at least until its slow response times really get on my nerves and I stop using it altogether) I'm a YNAB believer now. It really does work.

This program is exactly was it claims. Our only issue is that is takes a lot of time & focus to set up. Also sitting there is all of April's income. April's income is what I'm paying my current bills with. It had helped me in managing my finance effectively and would recommend it to anyone. Growing up, I was never taught to budget. I have savings about twice that, and I live well within my means. However, I wanted to get back in touch with my budgeting because I mainly do it in my head, and it can get stressful because I "budgeted" by limiting my expenses at all times.

This system basically works by, as one commenter said, living off your last month's income. While hard to accomplish, once you do, this makes life MUCH easier. It's a bit confusing. This is a great concept that has worked well for me. It requires dedication and commitment on your part to make the program work, but I can assure you that if you buy this program and apply the four rules it will change your financial situation quicker than you can believe. If you are looking for a full accounting program then move on to one of the others, but if like me you are drowning in debt and tired of living from one pay day to another, then seriously consider getting YNAB. Love the free updates as well. I bought the YNAB software after reading recommendations and it had become available for Mac.

This is a vital reference function to me. It is taking so much time and energy to try to learn this system that I am giving up for now and heading back to Quicken. I would recommend this to anyone who is serious about starting and sticking to a budget! We started using this software as a New Year's resolution.
